Since 1 July 2025 the country runs on 34 provinces and a simpler two-tier system, so a place you read about may now sit in a differently named province. How many provinces and cities are there in Vietnam?+
As of 1 July 2025, there are 34 provincial-level administrative units in the country: 6 centrally-controlled cities (Hà Nội, TP. Hồ Chí Minh, Hải Phòng, Đà Nẵng, Huế, Cần Thơ) and 28 provinces.
Are there still district-level units?+
No. The new model consists of only two levels: provincial level and commune level (ward / commune / special zone). District-level operations have ceased; the total number of communes nationwide has decreased from 10,035 to 3,321.
Which province does my hometown belong to now?+

Do I need to change my vehicle license plate and old ID card (CCCD)?+
It is not mandatory to change them immediately. Documents issued before the merger remain legally valid until they expire or until you choose to update them.
Which province is the largest and most populous?+
The largest in terms of area is Lâm Đồng (a merger of Lâm Đồng + Đắk Nông + Bình Thuận). The most populous is TP. Hồ Chí Minh. For details on the area/population of each province, please visit the corresponding province page.
